The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig is a trail for slowing down and leaving everyday life behind. Stretching for approximately 415 kilometres, it leads from Perl on the Moselle through the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park to Boppard on the Rhine, with a branch leading to Trier, Germany’s oldest city. It is one of Europe’s Premium long-distance hiking trails with the highest proportion of near-natural paths.

In the Premium Hiking Region between the Moselle, Rhine, Saar and Nahe rivers, a dense network of more than 100 hiking trails has been created to complement the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig – trails that can quite literally make you dream: the “Traumschleifen Saar-Hunsrück”. They lead through enchanted valleys and offer fantastic views.
Hikers looking for shorter and easier routes can choose from 27 “Traumschleifchen”.
The certified trails offer pure hiking enjoyment for every level of ability and ambition.
The Premium Hiking Region Saar-Hunsrück
Forests and fields, mountains and valleys, water and rocks – outstanding landscape experiences are guaranteed in the land of the Traumschleifen.
The Traumschleifen range from six to 20 kilometres in length, are designed as circular routes and are so clearly signposted that it is virtually impossible to lose your way. Some can be accessed directly from the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, while others are located only a short distance away. Each loop has its own distinctive charm. Along the way, hikers can discover old mines and castle ruins, lakes and highlights such as the Geierlay suspension bridge in Mörsdorf in the Hunsrück, the Celtic ring wall in Otzenhausen and medieval cities such as Trier.
Along the trails, there are numerous beautiful places to stop and relax – from hiker-friendly inns to “Genuss-Truhen” offering regional drinks and/or food.
The Traumschleifchen, the “smaller” Premium Walking Trails, have complemented the Traumschleifen since 2015. They are ideal for people who would like to try hiking for the first time, have only a few hours available, or are exploring the region with children.
Rustic forest sections and wide, scenic meadow landscapes provide relaxed hiking experiences with only moderate elevation gains. The Premium Walking Trails meet the same quality criteria as the “classic” Premium Trails.

Premium Trails with the additional “RegionalGenuss” certification
Certified long-distance trails (Premium Trails or Quality Trails)
Component 2: Well Informed
The Premium Hiking Region publishes a printed hiking map featuring all Premium Trails in the region.
The trail network is made clearer through categories such as easy and difficult.
Signposted access routes lead from bus stops and railway stations to all Premium Trails where public transport stops are located within a distance of up to 1.5 kilometres.
Component 3: Hiker-Friendly Hosts
Hosts support the region’s mobility concept. Pick-up and drop-off services to the trails are available, as well as luggage transfers for long-distance trails.
Seasonal culinary events and promotions are offered by local restaurants and are jointly coordinated and marketed by the Hiking Region and participating businesses.
Hiking huts, cafés and snack bars are available along 50% of the Premium Trails; their opening hours and distances from the trail portals are displayed there (maximum 10 minutes away).
The region cooperates with organisations that promote sustainable and regional food, such as Slow Food organisations and Ebbes von Hei!.

Additional hiking events and guided hikes on a variety of themes are offered regularly (at least once a year):
Culinary experiences and hiking (e.g. beer hikes, wine hikes and three-course-menu hikes)
