German Hiking Institute e.V.
Since the German Hiking Institute (Deutsches Wanderinstitut e.V.) was founded around 22 years ago, nearly 800 certified "Premium Trails" with a total length of approximately 11.000 km have been established across Germany—and even in other European countries.
This development has significantly shaped the hiking landscape in Germany. Thanks to a consistent focus on quality—underpinned by our certification criteria enthusiasm for hiking has been reignited among many people. Consequently, hiking has become a major economic driver and, frequently, a key factor in the appeal of tourist destinations.
Shaping the World of Hiking
Together with our many loyal companions in the tourism industry and partners in hiking research, we are continuously advancing the sport of hiking. True to our motto, "Shaping the World of Hiking", we have many new ideas to further promote sustainable hiking tourism.
In doing so, we prioritize nature conservation and the preservation of cultural landscapes, while actively seeking partnerships with nature parks, national parks, conservation organizations such as NABU and BUND, and other groups that utilize the natural environment.
The various certificates
The German Hiking Institute has developed 4 different certificates, which provide guidance for the hiking guest. Three of these certificates were developed for the trail infrastructure: Premium Hiking Trails, Premium City Hiking Trails and Premium Walking Trails. For regions and locations that offer their guests comprehensive service and additional offers related to hiking, the certificate Premium Hiking Region/ Premium Hiking Location is awarded.
Premium Hiking Trails are circular and linear trails that are not only excellently marked, but additionally have a particularly high experience value. On these trails, a balanced and beautiful hiking experience is guaranteed. Pleasant paths and surfaces shape these trails as well as many details: views, forest impressions, water bodies, rock structures, cultural and historical gems, and many other aspects can contribute to a highly diverse hike.

Premium Walking Trails are short circular trails with a particularly high experience value. With a length of 3 to 7 km, they are especially tailored to the needs of walkers who value the landscape and nature experiences.

Premium City Hiking Trails are trails in cities that include over the entire route a contiguous and balanced ratio of interesting urban and touristic sites and nature experiences both in and close to the city.

Premium Hiking Regions and Premium Hiking Towns offer their guests comprehensive services and extras related to hiking. In addition to a portfolio of outstanding Premium Hiking Trails, the gastronomy here is especially suited for hikers. The range of information available through websites and printed products is comprehensive and also covers local public transportation and other attractions in the region. Regular guided hikes, also on various topics, round off the hiking tourism offer.
