Lava Dome & Lava Cellars

Experience a volcanic eruption without burning your fingers? Feel the earth tremble without putting yourself in danger? All this – and much more – is possible at the Lava Dome.

In the exhibition area “In the Land of Volcanoes”, a multimedia volcanic eruption spectacularly demonstrates the extreme forces of nature. Near the Lava Dome, visitors descend 150 steps – or take the lift – deep underground, right into a cooled lava flow: the Lava Cellars. Here, a unique landscape awaits 30 metres beneath the town of Mendig. This system of tunnels and shafts was created when the people of Mendig began mining the valuable grey basalt in the late Middle Ages.
